Let’s Talk About Protective Hairstyles

Loving my type 4 hair means learning how to truly take care of it—not just physically, but mentally too. I’ve noticed that when I’m in a bad mood and go to do my hair, I’m not as patient. I don’t detangle properly, and I’m not as gentle—especially since I have fine strands.

That’s one of the reasons protective styles work so well for me. They allow my hair to rest in a protected state for one to two weeks without heavy tension.

Some great protective styles are mini twists, flat twists, and wigs. There are also styles like weaves, braids, crochet, and wash-and-go's. I think those are more long-term styles, and what works really depends on your hair. For example, fine, low-density hair might not benefit from braids the same way thicker, high-density hair does.

Wash-and-go's are beautiful too, but they require proper care—otherwise, you can end up with fairy knots.

At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for your hair—what you feel your hair responds to. Just make sure you’re keeping up with washing your scalp at least once a week or every two weeks, and moisturizing your hair in between.

Good luck on your journey—you’ve got this 💛
